چکیده
Localized Neurogenic Vasoconstriction of the Basilar Artery • Ring segments from the caudal end of the basilar artery of the rabbit contract to electrical stimulation of their intramural nerve supply more than those from adjacent parts of the vertebral and the rostral three-fourths of the basilar arteries. The magnitude of developed neurogenic tension is approximately one-fourth that of the ear artery, a highly reactive muscular artery. The position of this reactive arterial segment suggests its role in the regulation of cerebral blood flow. Additional

Ultrastructural distribution of vasodilator and constrictor nerves in cat cerebral arteries.
This study examined the ultrastructural distribution of agranular vesicle-containing nerve (AVN) and granular vesicle-containing nerve (GVN) in cat cerebral blood vessels fixed in KMnO4. The percentages of the AVN and GVN throughout the adventitial layer in the basilar, middle cerebral, and anterior cerebral arteries were 63.4 and 36.7, 53.9 and 46.1, and 60.2 and 39.8, respectively. The AVN in...
متن کاملNeurogenic sympathetic vasoconstriction of the rabbit basilar artery.
When examined by fluorescence microscopy the rabbit basilar artery contains a rich adrenergic-like plexus at the adventitiomedial junction. The fluorescence disappears upon chronic reserpinization and bilateral superior cervical ganglionectomy. Transmural stimulation of intramural nerves a results in a response which is predominantly constrictor but also contains a small, inconstant dilator com...
متن کاملRole of tyrosine kinase in serotonin-induced constriction of the basilar artery in vivo.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Serotonin is one of the most potent constrictors of cerebral blood vessels and is implicated in several pathological conditions, including migraine and cerebral ischemia. Recent evidence has suggested that tyrosine kinase is involved in vasocontractile responses. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that activation of tyrosine kinase contributes to serot...
متن کاملEndothelin acts in feline and canine cerebral arteries from the adventitial side.
We investigated the in vivo vasoconstrictor effect of endothelin, a recently characterized vasoconstrictor peptide from vascular endothelium, in the basilar arteries of five cats and five dogs. Basilar artery caliber was angiographically measured under anesthesia before (control) and after either vertebral artery infusion or cisternal injection of the peptide. In cats, 5-500 pmol endothelin ind...
متن کاملVasoconstrictive effects of levobupivacaine on the basilar artery in the rabbit
INTRODUCTION Spinal anesthesia is a widely used technique of the modern practice of anesthesia. Spinal cord ischemia is a rare but catastrophic complication of spinal anesthesia which may be caused by a direct vasoconstrictive effect of the local anesthetic. Although the vasoconstrictive effects of levobupivacaine have been widely studied, the vasoconstrictive effects of this drug on the intrad...
